Changing the conversation about work and cancer

Working With Cancer Partners with Working Transitions to Strengthen Workplace Support for Employees Affected by Cancer

We are delighted to announce our new partnership with Working Transitions, workplace coaching and career transition specialists. Together, we are committed to helping employers respond to cancer in the workplace with greater confidence, compassion and expertise.

The reality facing employers today

Nearly 900,000 people of working age in the UK are currently living with cancer. As diagnosis rates continue to rise and treatment pathways improve, more employees than ever are balancing a cancer diagnosis alongside their working lives.

For many organisations, this raises questions they are not fully equipped to answer. How do you support an employee through diagnosis, treatment and recovery? How do you ensure your managers respond with both compassion and legal compliance? And how do you retain valuable talent through one of the most difficult experiences a person can face?

These are not easy questions. But they are ones that every employer needs to be prepared for.

Bridging the gap between cancer and employment

Working With Cancer exists to close the gap between cancer and the workplace. We offer expert guidance, training, coaching and policy advice to employers, employees, the self-employed, job seekers and carers, all delivered by a team of experienced professionals who bring their own lived experience of cancer to every conversation.

That combination of professional expertise and personal understanding is what makes our approach different. It is not just informed. It is human.

Working Transitions brings a complementary depth of experience in supporting organisations through their most sensitive and complex people challenges. The partnership is a natural one, grounded in shared values and a shared belief that workplaces can and should do better when cancer touches someone’s life.

What the partnership means in practice

Through this partnership, organisations will have access to specialist support that works for everyone involved.

For employees affected by cancer, our coaching helps them understand their needs, their limits and their options and feel genuinely able to express them at work, without fear or uncertainty.

For managers and HR professionals, it provides the knowledge, tools and confidence to respond in a way that is compassionate, consistent and legally sound, reducing absence, retaining talent and ensuring no one is left to navigate this alone.

The coaching is designed to be discreet, straightforward and practical, reducing pressure on HR teams while ensuring that everyone involved feels connected, informed and supported.

Why this matters

As our Founder Barbara Wilson has highlighted in The HR Director Magazine: “It’s essential that HR directors understand how to help employees facing cancer. Not just because it’s the right thing to do, but also because getting it wrong can have significant financial and legal consequences.”

Caroline Moore, Managing Director at Working Transitions, echoes that commitment: “When cancer touches someone’s life, many companies find themselves without the expertise to support that person while also navigating their legal responsibilities. We can change that, and we look forward to working with organisations that are serious about making work a better place to be, even when life is at its hardest.”
